Tourism map creation. Starting from analysing the village map, I designed a greyscale map to meet the hostel’s brand image. Then developed an extra product line so they could sell as a souvenir.
Hostel do Mar. Carrapateira, Portugal, 2018
The client wishes to give all their visitors a map that can guild them around the village, find the ATM/grocery/restaurant and return to the hostel.Starting from analysing the village map, I divided it into three layers: roads, important buildings and other buildings. The map was presented in greyscale to meet the hostel’s brand image. The same image can later print on a tote bag, so the hostel can sell it as a souvenir.
The hostel is located in a small village south of Portugal. Bikers, hikers and surfers flew in the area from everywhere worldwide. The hostel needs a map to show its guests where the grocery, ATM, restaurant, etc., and opening hours are. Other than these locations, the direction to the other town also needs to be highlighted on the map.
I divided the map into three layers: roads, important buildings, and other facilities. The roads and important buildings are highlighted in black so the reader can catch the essential information. The rest of the blocks are filled with a gradient of watercolour to soften the whole image. The hostel was promoting a beach cleaning program at that moment. They will give a tote bag as a gift if their guest brings back a bag of garbage from the beach. Therefore, I proposed to print the simplified map on a tote bag, and the hostel could also sell it as a souvenir. Hostel guests can use the bag for their beach gear or groceries and bring them back to the hostel.I also practised on SketchUp to build the hostel and two other important buildings around the main plaza. The building's shape and colour turned out very helpful for the guest because not all the shops in Carrapatera have a big sign. We wish to apply it in more places but unfortunately didn't have time.
